former professional dancer provides new fitness options
a chat with grenita 'green' bolan on what drives her and the benefits of a private fitness studio

Grenita 'Green' Bolan was trapped in her body. She tried to move just as she had a million times and nothing happened.
The then 31-year-old tried to scream out to her husband, who was driving her to the hospital, but there was only silence.
"It was really scary. I didn't know what was happening and doctors didn't know what happened either.", Green recalls.
The incident occurred 13 years ago when Green was six (6) months pregnant with her first child. She eventually learned that she had suffered a stroke but no one knew why.
It was quite a shock for Green, who led what some might call a hyper-active lifestyle. Green was once a professional award winning dancer and choreographer who performed with numerous Top-Charting artists in front of large audiences.
Green gradually returned to health and gave birth to a healthy baby boy but she had become sedentary and her weight ballooned.
"I put on about 40 pounds after my delivery, which, for me, had never happened and it was traumatic.", said the 5-foot-4 Green. I had always been active and in-shape. Then you put on weight. You look in the mirror and you don't like the way you look. You feel bad. Then you eat something to make yourself feel better. It becomes a vicious cycle."
Green and her mirror didn't see eye-to-eye and finally she decide it was time to do something about it.
"When you get tired of saying 'I don't like what I see.' to yourself over and over, that's when it's time to make a change.", she said.
Green made a change that affects many people today. She has dedicated her life to helping others improve their physical fitness.
To go from being so active to being bed-ridden, Green knew something had to change. following her return to health, she worked as a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness instructor at several local gyms and spas. However, she felt something was missing and she decided to open her own place, Green G Fitness Studio on 26th Street West, three (3) years ago.
Born in Sarasota but raised in New York, Green came back to attend and graduate fromEckerd College. After extensive traveling and a career as a professional dancer, Green made Sarasota/Bradenton her home.
Using her talents as a trainer/exercise specialist and former professional dancer, Green is able to accommodate the needs of her clients which range from teenage athletes to aging baby boomers.
"I cater to mature adults, teenagers, professional athletes, and people with injuries/physical limitations. The people who enjoy coming here, typically who don't want to deal with gym politics and being just a face in a crowd in a large gym full of machines.", said Green. "When you come here, there is no drama. It is a drama-free zone and we maintain that. It's private and you get a good workout without any of the other nonsense."
Samantha Drake is one of Green's clients. She is a former ice skater who wants to get into ballroom dancing and came to Green to reshape her legs.
"She understood what ballroom judges critique most plus how what to tone and strengthen. Green is not all about one or two things. She constantly mixes things up and keeps it fun, interesting and challenging", Ms. Drake said. "She has a great energy, makes it fun and doesn't intimidate you. I went to her because I needed a specific type of strength training. I was having trouble with certain dances because I was so grounded.
"I needed somebody who knew and understood dancing, a dancer's body and the exercises best suited for dancers. Training with Green has helped me so much and made an definite impact on my dancing. I'm in better shape and I'm dancing noticeably better. I couldn't have asked for more!", Ms. Drake said.
Green doesn't believe that you need machines to get in shape. In her opinion, one size does not fit all. She uses muscle confusion through variations in volume, load and repetition.
"Some trainers swear by machines. I don't. Of course there are some machines that if used properly, will give the desired results but most people use them incorrectly. People have the tendency to believe that standardized machines fit all sizes. Nothing fits all."
"Most if the time the biggest thing for the person to actually is actually showing up and getting through the door. You get to the gym and have no idea where to start. I saw people basically setting themselves up for injuries. Here, everything is personal. It's more about quality of life than anything."
"Everyone is built differently. There are even more differences in how to train a woman versus a man. I understand female form and what it takes to sculpt and strengthen without the use of machines or excessively heavy weights."
